Private Property. Exempt from the daily Reservation Fishing Fee of $8.00
• Live restaurant quality trout you can catch yourself! Hook and line or net.
• Sometimes you fish all day and don’t get a strike, much less land a fish
• Sometimes it’s dinner time and you say, “honey, let’s have trout”
• Sometimes it’s a treat for the kids to catch a fish . . . and get grampa to pay for it
• Sometimes you just want to see a huge trout
If you fit any of these categories, you will enjoy a trip to Morgan Mill Trout Farm Attaction. Admission of $1.00 covers your entrance fee to visit the attraction, and this dollar also qualifies you to fish should you decide to stay and catch a few. The admission fee is used exclusively to maintain the grounds and to promote health of the trout. The trout you catch at Morgan Mill are guaranteed free of impurities of any sort and are certified to government standards. You cannot get any closer to “made in the USA” than trout from Cherokee, NC!
Come alone and have a whole pool to yourself or bring the whole family.
The crystal clear mountain waters that flow through the hatchery are diverted from the nearby river and are always supplying fresh water to the trout. The fish learn how to tap on the feeding cylinders to release food on demand. The youngest fish are the ones in the impounds furtherest uphill and they are three to five inches. The lower holding ponds have the juveniles which are 6 inches to a foot. Kids enjoy seeing this progression from small to large. The really large trout are swimming in natural pools at the lower end of the facility and these ponds are the sites for you to catch your own keepers. Just for tonight, don’t go to the restaurant and pay $21 a plate for trout. Catch your own. Cleaning is free and filleting is only one dollar - ready to pan fry when you get home!
For $3.95 a pound you can catch all you want and the cleaning is free. If you haven’t got your own poles with you, we supply the tackle at no charge. We even bag your catch on ice for free! We accept cash, Mastercard and Visa.
Established around 1978, the Owen family has operated two facilities (one here in Cherokee and the other in Brevard) as a tourist attraction and as the supplier to local restaurants. This farm raises Rainbow Trout—the species favored by restaurants-- exclusively. The first order that Alfred Owen delivered (in 1985) was to the Lake Toxaway Restaurant and he delivered the trout in a cooler on the back of his motorcycle.
Alfred is present on the farm every day but Friday, and the farm is closed to the public on this day. You may arrive any time after 9 am, and the gates do not close until 5 pm. By special arrangement, Alfred will open the farm after hours for private parties. Groups are also welcomed during regular hours.
While you are in Cherokee, stop by the visitor center for information on the area waterfalls, and other Smokey Mountains attractions.
